How to carry, store, and ship your luggage
How to Carry Luggage in Japan
You can carry your luggage if it meets size guidelines, ship your luggage from place to place, or store it at local train stations or other luggage storage facilities.
Carrying Luggage
To be able to transit through Japan efficiently, it is recommended to take one carry on and one checked bag. The size guidelines in the photo are for the Shinkansen only, however the same principle for luggage size can apply to the trains. On the Shinkansen, there is overhead storage and inter-car storage. On the local trains, there is only overhead storage. If you have oversized luggage - recommend scheduling a large cab or reserving your luggage on the Shinkansen. If you do not wish to travel with it - you can use overnight or next day shipping services.
Shipping Luggage
Luggage shipping is typically offered via Yamato Black Cat TA-Q-BIN services. You can overnight luggage short distances, and next day ship luggage longer distances. This is recommended for large items sush as skis, suitcases for children who cannot carry them, or large luggage you don't wish to take on trains. Look for this logo to find local shipment stations or inquire with your hotel as some will offer this service for you.
Storing Luggage
When traveling, efficient luggage storage is crucial for a hassle-free experience. Many accommodation options in Japan, such as hotels, provide luggage storage facilities for guests. Additionally, major transportation hubs like train stations often provide staffed luggage storage services for both short and long-term needs. Many large cities or stations have coin lockers where you can store luggage for approximately a week at a time. Sizes range from purses to a large suitcase and carry on. These are perfect for large purchases you don't wish to carry around with you all day. Always check the opening hours and any associated fees for luggage storage services to plan accordingly.
